Director


Maria Lamont is a Canadian Opera and Theatre Director. Maria has directed productions for The Cologne Opera, The Dutch National Opera, Pacific Opera Victoria, Edmonton Opera, The University of Toronto, The Theatre Centre Toronto, and Native Earth Theatre Toronto, among others.

Maria began her 2023/24 season by directing the world première of The Strangers by Frank Pesci for Die Oper Köln. Her production of Carmen was revived to kick off the 60th Anniversary season of Edmonton Opera, and she recently directed Cendrillon by Jules Massenet for the University of Toronto Opera Division at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto.

Maria directed Don Giovanni for Pacific Opera Victoria and co-directed Operettaland for the Dutch National Opera. Other productions include The Boy Who Grew Too Fast by Gian Carlo Menotti for the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, in a new Dutch translation as well as the COVID-19 adaptation of Le Nozze di Figaro for the DNO.

Maria began her career as an actor, and is also an experienced assistant and revival director. She has worked in many international opera houses, including La Scala Milan, Teatro Real Madrid, La Monnaie, Theatre an der Wien, Opéra National du Rhin, Teatro dell' Opera Roma, Théâtre des Champs Elysées, The English National Opera, The Canadian Opera Company, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, The Saito Kinen Festival,  and The Royal Danish Opera, among others.

Maria is a graduate of the University of Manitoba (English Literature and Theatre), The Vancouver Playhouse Acting School ( Performance), and the University of Toronto Opera Division ( Opera Stage Direction).

Maria currently lives in Antwerp, Belgium
